Psalm 31

This week’s Song To Live By is Psalm 31

Andy writes:

Refuge.

Do you have a place and a person to go to when the attacks on your life are becoming overwhelming?

This week’s song points us to the prince of Peace, it calls us to make him the rescuer that we run to.

There are times in the life of a disciple when we come under attack.  Agents of evil of various kinds are actually arrayed against us; and we’re all too aware that we don’t have enough resources in ourselves to repel them.  This song was written from a time like this, for times like these.

The temptation is so often to give in, to check out, to roll over, to fold.  But this psalm is an anthem that reminds us of the truths about our tower of strength. Yes, people may be out to get us; yes, we can be afflicted and anguished; our own strength may be failing and those we usually look to for help are part of the problem - but there is a great one…

One who hears our cries; one who is capable to cover us; one who not just rescues but also redeems.  When the chips are down, this is the song to play nice and loud, and He is the one that we run to for refuge.

TA disciple of Jesus might feel like you have heard this song before.  That’s because it’s got lyrics our Saviour sang; when he was besieged and betrayed; when his body was broken, and he was losing to death; this is the song he chose to live by.  In our darkest moments, let’s do the same.

A Prayer

Lord, thank you that you can be trusted.  I don’t always understand everything that’s going on; from where am sat defeat=at can sometimes seem inevitable.  But the only thing that is really inevitable is your ongoing goodness and the victory of your Kingdom.  Thank you.  I will be strong and take heart.
