Psalm 19

This week’s Song To Live By is Psalm 19

Andy writes:

The Psalmist signposts three sources that can sustain our savouring of the Saviour.

One source is nature.  The Psalm preaches that the heavens are singing to us about His glory.  The sun in the sky is showing us a little bit about what He’s like.  The saunter of a bridegroom on his honeymoon; the preciousness of gold; the sweetness of honey… everywhere we look God’s creation is calling out to us. It’s telling us about the marvellousness of our maker.

Are you listening?  Could you take some time today to stop and listen to this song that nature sings?  To let a tree talk to you about the tremendous nature of your King?  To let the fragrance of a flower feed your thoughts to fullness about the glory of God?  Could you let the warmth of the sun remind you that you’re really basking in the beauty of the Lord?  This is a sweet song to live by…

And there’s another source we can draw from as we seek to hear the song of God’s goodness - his word.  You want to be refreshed today?  Look at the law of the Lord - really look.  You want to become wiser? Spend some time strolling through his statutes.  You want life to seem a bit brighter? Keep contemplating his commands.  You want something that will last?  Forge a fear of the Lord in the deepest places of your soul.  The word will woo you; the word will wrestle you, the word will win you and the word will make a worshipper out of you.  Let this source be your source.  Get in to the word today, it is the song to live by,

And yet this Psalm still has another source… the songwriter… the artistry of others.  This is a sweet source of sustenance.  Psalm 19 is skilfully written: there is reason and there is rhyme. There are metaphors and messages.  There is sound and there is sights in here.  These words from the mouth, and these meditations of the heart are pleasing.  Let the great worshippers of Yahweh from across the ages and across the nations lead you in song sometimes.  Allow the art of the adorers to assist your ascent.  Get before godly art and let it lead you in song.

Nature declares; the word witnesses; the artists announce.  This song is being played all over the place - have ears to hear it today.

A prayer:

God you are glorious.  You shine brighter than sun in the sky.  Let me see your glory today.  Let me gorge on your goodness and revel in your love.  God your word is perfect.  Help me to hear your word; give me understanding; give me grace.  God, you are worth singing about.  How marvellous, how wonderful, and my song shall ever be.  How wonderful, how marvellous is my saviour’s love for me.
